How It Happened

The match was delayed by an hour as a summer storm battered Mexico City. When the game finally kicked off, the atmosphere inside Azteca was unlike anything this tournament has produced — 87,000 Mexicans, roaring for history, willing their team to break the curse.

Ecuador, to their credit, tried to play football. But the atmosphere, the occasion, and Mexico's quality in the final third was too much.

In the 22nd minute, Roberto Alvarado found Julián Quiñones with a perfectly timed through ball. Quiñones — who had been denied a World Cup call-up in previous cycles — finished with the composure of a man who had been waiting for this moment his entire career. 1-0 Mexico. Azteca erupts.

Nine minutes later, a quick combination play between Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez inside the box — a give-and-go that had been drilled thousands of times on training pitches — saw Jiménez convert at close range. 2-0.

The game was done by the 31st minute. Mexico controlled the second half, allowing Ecuador no way back. Piero Hincapié was sent off in stoppage time for Ecuador, making the final stages even more straightforward.

The 'Quinto Partido' Curse, Explained

Since 1994, Mexico had qualified for the knockout stage of every World Cup and exited in the Round of 16 (or equivalent) every time — a run of seven consecutive eliminations at that stage. The curse was so well known it had a name: el quinto partido — the fifth match that Mexico could never play.
