France vs Paraguay Round of 16 Preview: Can the Giant-Killers Do It Again?

Now they face France.

If Germany were a mountain, France is an entire mountain range.

Paraguay's Path Here

Paraguay were organised, direct, and dangerous throughout the group stage. Julio Enciso — 21 years old, Brighton's most electric talent — has been their best player.

Against Germany, they executed a near-perfect defensive display. Enciso's opening goal came from a brilliant counter-attack. Germany's equaliser forced extra time. Tah's disallowed header was the turning point. In the shootout, Paraguay held their nerve while Germany couldn't.

Now they need to do something even harder: contain France.

Their counter-attacking threat — Enciso in behind, physical forward runners — could create one or two moments. But against France's defensive midfield and back four, creating clear chances will be difficult.

The Tactical Reality

France will dominate possession. Mbappé will drift and probe and find the spaces that no system can fully protect against. Olise will combine, switch, and find passes that don't look available until they are.

Paraguay's only viable strategy is a low defensive block, patiently defending deep, and trying to hurt France on the break. If they can hold France for 75 minutes and score one on the counter, they create a game.

The problem: France are not Germany. France can break down a low block. They have the patience, the creativity, and the individual quality to do it.

Paraguay's danger window: The opening 20 minutes, if France underestimate the occasion. And set pieces — Paraguay are physically imposing.

Prediction

France 2-0 — Mbappé score, one more from Barcola or Olise. Paraguay defend well but France have too much quality to be held for 90 minutes.

The only scenario in which this is close: France take their foot off the gas after an early goal, and Paraguay get a moment on the counter. It has happened to France before at major tournaments.

But this France side looks like it wants the trophy. Paraguay will make them work. They won't make them sweat.
